Over 150 scientists warned of the need for immediate action in the Monaco Declaration on Ocean Acidification, released on 30 January after a UN conference on the subject. Ocean acidification is for saltwater bodies what climate change is for terrestrial systems - a response to rapidly rising CO2 levels. Earth’s oceans act as a sink, absorbing and dissolving carbon from the atmosphere. read more  |

Fishing and environmental groups challenged California resource management agencies on multiple fronts last week. On 4 February, a coalition including the Sierra Club, PCFFA, IFR and local conservation groups sued the North Coast Water Quality Control Board and the State Water Resources Control Board for failing to enforce Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) standards for pollution and sediment levels in North Coast waterways. read more  |
